FAQ
Transparency: How Our Bite Logic Works
PrimeBite is committed to full transparency about how our bite ratings are calculated. All our algorithms are based on peer-reviewed, open-access research. Below you can find detailed documentation for each species and for the baseline profile.
Solunar Windows (Baseline)
Baseline is classic solunar timing only (Major/Minor windows, dawn/dusk overlap, moon-illumination tweak). Best for freshwater when your species isn't listed (e.g. bass, crappie, bluegill). Not species-verified.
- Solunar Windows (Baseline) — Full Transparency (Website Page) — Equations, variables, citations, window-scale calibration (Major floor 2.0, Minor ceiling 3.0), and evidence rationale.
Yellowfin Tuna
Yellowfin is our reference offshore profile (phase + illumination + oceanography with anti-double-counting caps). We publish a dedicated, full transparency page (math + citations + verbatim quotes + calibration rationale).
- Yellowfin Tuna — Full Transparency (Website Page) — All equations, every variable, every URL, exact quotes with page pointers, calibration rationale, worked examples, and a model changelog.
Mahi‑mahi
Mahi uses an offshore all‑day rating driven by moon phase (shared Yellowfin/Mahi curve), plus a small capped ocean block (SST + chlorophyll‑a). We publish a dedicated, full transparency page (math + citations + verbatim quotes + calibration rationale).
- Mahi‑mahi — Full Transparency (Website Page) — All equations, every variable, every URL, exact quotes with page pointers, calibration rationale, worked examples, and a model changelog.
Big Eye Tuna
Our Big Eye Tuna rating system uses moon phase patterns and oceanographic data (sea surface temperature and chlorophyll-a) to predict activity.
- Bigeye Tuna — Full Transparency (Website Page) — All equations, every variable, every URL, exact quotes with page pointers, calibration rationale, worked examples, and a model changelog.
Black Marlin
Black Marlin (v1) is an offshore all‑day rating driven by moon phase (quarter‑phase peaks), a modest seasonality multiplier (GBR‑anchored, applied globally as a modeling choice), and an SST-only ocean modifier (capped; includes a conservative cold out‑of‑habitat penalty).
- Black Marlin — Full Transparency (Website Page) — All equations, every variable, every URL, exact quotes with page pointers, calibration rationale, worked examples, and a model changelog.
Walleye (Freshwater)
Walleye (v1) is a freshwater Major/Minor-window rating anchored to open-access evidence for moon position (overhead/underfoot), gibbous-over-quarter phase ordering, and crepuscular / low-light effects. The exact lift sizes and seasonality cap are calibrated to produce stable 1.0–5.0 ratings.
- Walleye — Full Transparency (Website Page) — All equations, every variable, every URL, exact quotes with page pointers, calibration rationale, worked examples, and a model changelog.
Muskie (Freshwater)
Muskie (v1) is a freshwater Majors-only window rating (moon overhead/underfoot) anchored to open-access evidence for new + waning gibbous phase ordering and strong dusk dominance. The exact lift sizes are calibrated, and Major-window ratings use percentile mapping so 1.0 and 5.0 are equally rare (commercial/UI scale mapping; raw-model math remains available).
- Muskie — Full Transparency (Website Page) — All equations, every variable, every URL, exact quotes with page pointers, calibration rationale (including percentile mapping), and a model changelog.
Northern Pike (Freshwater)
Northern Pike (v1) is a freshwater all‑day rating (no Major/Minor “bite times”) anchored to open-access evidence that catch rates are higher around new + full moons, at higher wind speeds (within the observed range), and during dusk. The curve shapes and magnitudes are calibrated to produce a stable 1.0–5.0 score.
- Northern Pike — Full Transparency (Website Page) — All equations, every variable, every URL, exact quotes with page pointers, calibration rationale, and a model changelog.

The PrimeBite Fishing app is designed to store your fishing data locally on your device. We do not run servers for this app, we do not track you, and we do not share your data.
What We Collect (On Your Device)
- Catch Photos (optional): References (URIs) to photos you attach to entries.
- Fishing Notes: Text you add to your logbook.
- Location Data (optional): GPS coordinates when you choose to tag a catch.
- Preferences: Settings like pounds vs. kilograms.
- Notification Preferences (optional): Settings for forecast notifications, including species selection, rating thresholds, and notification times.
All information above is stored locally on your device. We do not collect it on our servers.
Why We Use This Data
- Logbook: Save and review your catches.
- Optional GPS Tagging: Remember where a catch happened.
- Bite Windows: Show suggested times using sunrise/sunset and moon phase.
- Preferences: Keep your chosen units and settings.
Permissions
- Location (Foreground Only, Optional): Requested only when you choose to tag a catch location.
- Photos/Library (Optional): Requested only when you choose to attach a photo.
The app works without granting these permissions.
Notifications
The app may send you push notifications for forecast reminders if you enable this feature. Notification preferences (including which species to monitor, rating thresholds, and notification times) are stored locally on your device. You can disable notifications at any time in your device settings or within the app.
Online Services We Call
Open-Meteo (Sunrise/Sunset and Weather Data): We query Open-Meteo for sunrise/sunset times and weather data (temperature, humidity, wind, precipitation, cloud cover, etc.) using your coordinates and date to improve accuracy. Requests are anonymous. If the network is unavailable, the app uses a local fallback calculation.
NOAA CoastWatch ERDDAP (Ocean Data): For offshore species forecasts, we query NOAA's CoastWatch ERDDAP service for sea surface temperature (SST) data using your coordinates and date. This is a free, public U.S. government service. Requests are anonymous. NOAA's privacy policy: https://www.noaa.gov/privacy-policy
Copernicus Marine Service (Chlorophyll Data): For offshore species forecasts, we query the Copernicus Marine Service (via a proxy server) for chlorophyll-a concentration data using your coordinates and date. Requests are anonymous. The proxy server does not store or log any user data. Copernicus privacy policy: https://marine.copernicus.eu/privacy-policy
